1. Note on the Translation and on the Place of the Book in Oriental Studies, and the Respect Due to it.
Description: A google book The book is ably and well edited, with the Preface and Introduction being useful to students and teachers alike. The original Russian is translated and the introduction and notes are a model of clearness and thoroughness, while the Introduction to the text, by N. Spalding, includes a valuable bibliography, with which a good dictionary should be supplemented. The notes on the translation (by Lewis, the translator), which is a new version, adds significantly to its value, while it clarifies many difficulties. Like all other works by H. B. Lee, this translation has been made before the text was known. The index is good, though it is not exhaustive. The book is the basis of the following papers on the history of the Science of Chemistry: K. T. Koch, On the First Chemical Revolution, New York, 1931, with a detailed list of works by H. B. Lee, and B. S. Beck, The G. K. (Theodore). Workshop On the History of Chemistry, New York, 1938.
2. The two marks at the beginning of the book are: (a) “Necessary Capital” and (b) “Development of the NCS.
Note: In this essay the author, A. Oparin, first of all acknowledges the debt he owes to H. B. Lee and his assistants. H. B. Lee, of course, is the author of the book before him and his assistants, A. I. Davidov, H. G. Woodard, and R. T. Browne, have helped him in every way.
3. The two marks at the beginning of the book are: (a) “Progress of the Natural Sciences to 1913” and (b) “Three Phases in the Development of the NCS.
Description: The first phase is characterized by the emphasis on classic concepts (an increase in the weight of atoms) which give place to the second phase, when more features of qualitative science take over.
4. The two marks at the beginning of the book are: (a) “Phases of the Development of the NCS” and (b) “Historical Remarks”
