Broughton Castle, or Broughton Tower, was a medieval castle on the site of the current town of Broughton in the Metropolitan Borough of Sunderland, Tyne and Wear, England. It was first built by Walter de Broughton in 1212 to protect the port of Brough, and the family lived there until 1323.
The castle was again built by Alexander de Broughton between 1330 and 1338, and was the home of his descendants. They lived there until 1547, when it was partially demolished. The only remains of the castle are the Broughton Tower. It is a Grade I listed building.
History
1212–1323
Walter de Broughton was granted land and a port in the area by William II in 1186. Walter’s son, Alexander de Broughton, built the first castle in 1212. The next year, Walter went to war against the English and was captured by King John. Walter and Alexander were both imprisoned in the Tower of London. Alexander was released in 1213, and gave up his estates and castles in the area. Walter received them back in 1219.
1330–1547
Alexander de Broughton took up residence at Broughton in 1330. He died in 1363, and his son, John de Broughton, inherited the castle in 1370. The family continued to live there until 1547, when the castle was partially demolished. Some of the castle was used to create the present-day Broughton Tower. The castle and its lands were forfeited to the Crown in 1547, and the Broughton family left.
Ownership of the castle was passed to Henry Savile in 1551. The Savile family moved to Doxford in 1553.
Restoration
In the 18th and 19th centuries, the castle became a ruin. In 1801, it was purchased by Thomas Seddon, who restored and remodelled the castle. Seddon also demolished parts of the castle, and added new architectural features.
In 1965, the current Broughton Tower was built. It was originally part of the castle, and was restored to look as it did in the 15th century.
